Set in rural England, the novel follows Adam Salton, recently returned from Australia, who encounters a mysterious series of events, all of which seem to be connected to the legend of the white worm. In the course of his investigations, Adam comes across a host of unusual characters - including the newly returned heir to the local estate, Edwin Caswell, who practises mesmerism, his brutish African servant, Oolanga, and the penniless and beautiful widow Lady March.
